Welcome to the Citizendium! We hope you will contribute boldly and well. Here are pointers for a quick start. You'll probably want to know how to get started as an author. Just look at Getting Started for other helpful "startup" links, our help system and CZ:Home for the top menu of community pages. Be sure to stay abreast of events via Twitter. You can test out editing in the sandbox if you'd like. If you need help to get going, the forum is one option. That's also where we discuss policy and proposals. You can ask any administrator for help, too. Just put a note on their "talk" page. Again, welcome and have fun! David Tribe 03:20, 28 February 2007 (CST)

Ahem. A mathematician with wit I see. A very warm welcome indeed to that. David Tribe 05:56, 28 February 2007 (CST)

in computers it MUST be a top subject due to its importance and as part of security I would prefer to see that imoportance reflected in maths as well Robert Tito | Talk 13:49, 2 March 2007 (CST)

more branches on the tree

Hi, by all means - add/cut-off redundancies as much as you can. I stopped only because I have tons of other stuff to do--dlehavi 15:40, 2 March 2007 (CST)

logic

..is unprotected. :-) Stephen Ewen 01:07, 3 March 2007 (CST)

Alex, sending a request to constables@citizendium.org might be faster as we do all have different time zones, and some might be in yours. Robert Tito | Talk 12:44, 3 March 2007 (CST)

imprted topics list from WP

Hi Alex, the lie groups list seems decent. The geometry list seems like a mishmush of redundent, good, dictionary, and I don't know what else.--dlehavi 11:04, 5 March 2007 (CST)

Big O notation

Alex, I see your request to move Big O notation to Big O notation(computer science). Are we looking to make another as well, Big O notation(mathematics)? Do we have a plan for disambiguation for Big O notation or just redirect to Big O notation(computer science). --Matt Innis (Talk) 14:15, 25 March 2007 (CDT)

Now, I propose

  • moving "Big O notation" to "Complexity of algorithms" (would appreciate comments from computer workgroup members). Just look at "see also" section at the bottom the article - "complexity theory" is where it really belongs in.
  • deleting the resulting redirect "Big O notation". This will be something different.

Okay, if I move this to Complexity of algorithms, would you be the one to clean it up, or do we need to get a computer science member involved now? --Matt Innis (Talk) 17:05, 25 March 2007 (CDT)

As you are a math author, would you consider discussing one of these two guys to see if they have a problem with your idea. If they don't respond, I will go with your suggestion for Big O. Then I will ask User:Robert Tito as a computer science editor to join us in the discussion for the Complexity of algorithms. Sound good? --Matt Innis (Talk) 08:13, 26 March 2007 (CDT)

Okay, Robert, meet us on my talk page as well. --Matt Innis (Talk) 08:51, 26 March 2007 (CDT) Big O is a standard way to solve equations in physics and chemistry by approximation. So only computers or mathematics will not suffice. Robert Tito |  Talk  12:13, 26 March 2007 (CDT)

AlekStos, I performed the move to Complexity of algorithms and deleted the redirect from Big O notation though I suppose you could have done that. Do please, add some content befoer someone nominates it for deletion in any cleanup function! Thanks for you patience in making sure everyone was on the same page. --Matt Innis (Talk) 12:41, 26 March 2007 (CDT)

The big O notation (and its relatives, such as the little o notation) is quite common in analysis and other parts of mathematics having nothing to do with analysis of algorithms. I believe it was introduced by Donald Knuth as an aide to the analysis of algorithms, but its use has spread well beyond that. Greg Woodhouse 23:02, 18 April 2007 (CDT)

Sorry I didn't respond for so long, Alek ... I agree that an article titled "Big O notation" is a bit weird - it'd be like having an article titled "The f(x) notation". Big O is a way to express certain ideas (in complexity theory, analysis, physics, and so on), and so it can be discussed where those ideas are discussed. - Greg Martin 17:57, 24 April 2007 (CDT)

WP credit

The articles Tycho Brahe and Joan of Arc were listed by yourself as needing the WP credit. The Tycho article already had a WP credit. Recently, I removed the last remaining WP material from the Joan of Arc article so it should not require such credit.

There is a WP credit on Timeline of Joan of Arc which should be removed as all content here on CZ was written by myself. I tried to remove the WP credit by unchecking the WP box, but that didn't work.

James F. Perry 13:02, 28 March 2007 (CDT)

Thanks for the list of "similitudes" in the JoA article. I will deal appropriately with them. Especially the Kelly DeVries sentence does not belong in any encyclopedia article. Now if I can just find it! And thanks for the tip on how to remove the WP credit.
The WP credit on Tycho Brahe was entered in a non-standard way because the WP template did not exist at the time. That would be really hard for a program to pick up. James F. Perry 13:52, 28 March 2007 (CDT)

I just dealt with the one paragrpah which contained 4 of the 5 WP leftover remnants. Near as I can figure, I had slated that passage for elimination, probably previewed it, but forgot to save the changes. There is now only the one sentence about Joan's parents to be revised.

The comparison script is fantastic! James F. Perry 11:04, 29 March 2007 (CDT)

The Timeline of Joan of Arc article was written by myself, originally posted to WP. Since my original posting, only a couple of changes (not all of which were merited) were made. They were then removed before bringing the article over here to CZ. So the CZ article was written by myself. I will leave a note on the Talk page of the article explaining that. This type of situation may be another problem for your script. Also in this category are Kilt, Kilt accessories, Amber Neben, Mari Holden, and others to follow. James F. Perry 13:23, 29 March 2007 (CDT)

Aleksander - the matieral on the Proctor compaction test article is entirely my own work; see the WP article history. After essentially completely rewriting the article for WP, I decided to contribute it here. Also, you mentioned "8 sentences" on the Irish dance article; I believe I wrote those, too, but failed to provide the diff. Can you tell me which are the 8 sentences? Anthony Argyriou 15:09, 29 March 2007 (CDT)

I don't mind at all that you've done what you did - it's not obvious what I did, and I failed to provide sufficient information, particularly in the Proctor compaction test article for anyone else to figure it out. Your answer to the eight sentences question will give me a lead on either finding the diffs to show it's my own work, or to remove/rewrite those sentences which are not mine. Anthony Argyriou 16:36, 29 March 2007 (CDT)

Alexander, a citizen asked me about Pseudoscience which had originally been rimmed down from a wp article nad has been extensively edited. It no longer has the wp box checked- I believe that this is becase it no longer needs it, but could kindly check? Thank you, Nancy Sculerati 18:57, 24 May 2007 (CDT)

Cantor's diagonal argument and other math articles

I know this is annoying, but for those of us who have forgotten, could you provide a glossary of symbols at a bottom section? I've forgotten what a lot of the symbols, including the Greek letters are, and so I can't read much of this, and I want to. I don't mean a whole explanations just a simple: Greek letter=theta Math symbol=union kind of thing.

Thanks for your patience in helping the unforgiveably ignorant (such as myself) :-) Nancy Sculerati 08:12, 31 March 2007 (CDT)

copy editing

I've been staring at the Complex number and Prime number articles for so long that another set of eyes for copy editing would be most welcome. Greg Woodhouse 10:57, 11 April 2007 (CDT)

Galileo credits

Thanks for installing the Author template on the talk page. Now I know what to do on the next article. Daniel Drake 15:11, 11 April 2007 (CDT)

Journal of Neuroendocrinology

Hi Alex. This article was written here by me and copied to Wikipedia by David Goodman. The WP disclaimer should therefore be eliminated.Gareth Leng 09:01, 17 April 2007 (CDT)

WP text in [[Systems biology]

Aleksander: If you could direct me me the the WP text, I'll delete and revise as necessary. I had planned to do that but got busy with Life and life. --Anthony.Sebastian (Talk) 22:35, 18 April 2007 (CDT)

Approved article image on main page

You know how to make this better formatted so the image appears next to approved? Stephen Ewen 18:43, 24 April 2007 (CDT)

WPAuthor template

Do you know why the Template:WPAuthor template does not appear to work as expected at Talk:Amber_House and perhaps tell me at User_talk:Wahib_Frank? Thanks in advance! Wahib Frank 10:56, 6 May 2007 (CDT)

Because you stupidly changed the `a' in author to an upper case `A', Frank! Be more careful in future. Should it be three or four tildes, though, when you use this template? Wahib Frank 11:01, 6 May 2007 (CDT)

Environmental engineering

Can you please check the Environmental engineering article for use of Wikipedia material from both the same article at WP and the Civil engineering]] article there? Thank you. Anthony Argyriou 13:59, 25 May 2007 (CDT)

Dublin

Oops, sorry about including the CZ:Geography template. Still learning... Thanks, Anton Sweeney 06:31, 11 June 2007 (CDT)

Template:WPauthor2

Aleksander - I've created a new template for people claiming author credit for Wikipedia articles, at the title link. The primary change is to allow people to specify the wikipedia article name. Please check it out and suggest improvements. I tried to make links, but was unable to - there are complications with multi-word article names. Anthony Argyriou 12:55, 22 June 2007 (CDT)

popups

Hey Aleks, does the popups work for you? I couldn't get it to work here, but I am no computer wiz! If you get it to work, can you let me know what I am doing wrong? --Matt Innis (Talk) 10:15, 27 June 2007 (CDT)

John Steinbeck article

If the John Steinbeck article is deleted, will that not leave the photo orphaned? If it weren't for that, I would say just delete it. James F. Perry 12:13, 30 June 2007 (CDT)

Bayesian filtering article?

Why was that marked external? It doesn't look to me like it's from anoter source. Did I miss something? Greg Woodhouse 12:13, 30 June 2007 (CDT)

CZ Live

Aleksander, I'm confused.

I thought you wanted to get rid of the CZ live category, so I haven't been including it.

Is this wrong?

Aleta Curry 19:15, 10 July 2007 (CDT)

Thanks for the prompt reply and the thread link! Cheers Aleta Curry 21:04, 11 July 2007 (CDT)

WP Author Template

Thanks for the template, Aleks, I'll be copying and pasting!

Do you prefer 'Aleks', 'Alex'...or 'Dr Stos' for that matter?
