Permission obtained

Hi, I have permission for some of my images in the form of an email, but I am confused about where to upload it. I'd be grateful for your help!

I have also changed the credits for my images as per the authors' wishes. They have asked that their book be credited as the source, and the author named as the person they obtained the image from originally. Can I request that this not be altered? Natasha Barbolini 12:01, 30 September 2007 (CDT)

Hi Natasha. You can simply forward the emails to me (see my email at my userpage) and I will handle the mechanics of documenting the permissions for you. I am a bit confused about the book/author issue, however. We need to credit who holds the copyright or who the copyright holder stipulates in any case. This may just be an issue of semantics that will be cleared up by the emails.  —Stephen Ewen (Talk) 19:13, 6 October 2007 (CDT)

On Wikipedia forks

Hi Steve, I noticed that the "Content from Wikipedia" checkbox is now missing from the editing area yet some new CZ authors have placed WP forks, such as the Superhero article, on CZ. How can these articles now be properly attributed as forks? Thanks. Hendra I. Nurdin 18:20, 2 October 2007 (CDT)

Hi Hendra. We just a few days ago update the Mediawiki software. Apparently, that was a casualty. We're most definitely concerned and are working on it. :-)  —Stephen Ewen (Talk) 19:21, 2 October 2007 (CDT)

Image mess

When you find time, can you fix the images below or suggest what to do? They won't display on the articles Phonology of Irish and Ireland (state). I tried deleting them to re-upload, but I just got an error message. I can't upload a new version of the first either - something about it being corrupt or missing an extension. Others uploaded since work fine. John Stephenson 03:21, 5 October 2007 (CDT)

Seems to be working, at last, by saving the file to harddrive and uploading it again. See Image:2C_cluster_mut.png.  —Stephen Ewen (Talk) 03:25, 5 October 2007 (CDT)
Yep - thanks. The only one that won't work by doing this is http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Image:Gaeltachtai_le_hainmneacha.svg - has the wiki lost .svg file recognition in the upgrade? John Stephenson 04:27, 5 October 2007 (CDT)
Is it safe for a neophyte like me to try to upload another picture? Hayford Peirce 13:41, 6 October 2007 (CDT)
Seems so. :-)  —Stephen Ewen (Talk) 13:43, 6 October 2007 (CDT)
I'll give it a go, myte. Hayford Peirce 13:54, 6 October 2007 (CDT)

Hi again. I have another version of 'Gaeltachtai_le_hainmneacha.svg' - I converted it to .png. Just to check: is it within the GFDL to convert files from one format to another? Thanks. John Stephenson 23:30, 6 October 2007 (CDT)

Absolutely, 100%.  —Stephen Ewen (Talk) 23:36, 6 October 2007 (CDT)

CZ must be legit or something

Check out the new way we're being linked to over at Wikipedia. This puts us at the same level as foreign language wikipedias, no? --Joe Quick (Talk) 14:11, 6 October 2007 (CDT)

Very cool. Someone there created an "internal" link to CZ.  —Stephen Ewen (Talk) 14:27, 6 October 2007 (CDT)
I can only hope that this is because we're mostly pushing for a license to prevent "lift-and-rip". --Robert W King 14:53, 7 October 2007 (CDT)

Waldo Peirce painting

Hi, Stephen, could you check out the Waldo painting I've added to the draft article? There *must* be a way we can use it! Hayford Peirce 14:36, 6 October 2007 (CDT)

Indeed, Virginia Foote or the estate would own the copyright. For now add your name here.  —Stephen Ewen (Talk) 14:54, 6 October 2007 (CDT)
Some interesting photos here.  —Stephen Ewen (Talk) 14:55, 6 October 2007 (CDT)
Thanks for the tip to that site -- I have a hard copy of that Hemingway journal but didn't realize that this site was available. Now I'm gonna bring in the Hemingway portrait he did for Time Magazine. This whole copyright business with art is baffling. If, for instance, the owner of the painting has the copyright, how come I'm always being told that *I* don't have the right to use photos of Frank Kelly Freas drawings I bought from him (they were illustrations used in magazines that published my stories)? I'm told that I own the pictures but Kelly (or his estate) owns the rights to them. If it's the *estate* who has the rights to the Silver Slipper painting, who the devil is the estate? When Waldo died, he left 4 living wives, 5 living children, and a couple of grandchildren. Which one of *them* has the right to this particular painting. Geez!
It's not really that difficult once you get used to it. This book has specific cases of how to handle art in near this circumstance, minus the fact that you are relative. The oldest living heir is who I would ask first.  —Stephen Ewen (Talk) 16:35, 6 October 2007 (CDT)
Specifically, there is a specific case dealt with in the book where a restaurant owner wanted to paint an entire wall in his new establishment to mimic a certain painting by a local artist nostalgically depicting life in the town. He was able to easily track down a nephew of the painter at the tip of a local librarian. As it turned out, the nephew told the restaurant owner that the artist, her aunt, was in her 90s and in a nursing home but still had her faculties and could maker her own decisions. So he simply wrote her a nice letter saying what the painting meant to him and what he wanted to do with it. In this case, he offered to pay $1,000 and did because it was a commercial use. She was delighted and give permission. It's an interesting story.  —Stephen Ewen (Talk) 16:43, 6 October 2007 (CDT)
Yes, it is. Waldo's #3 wife is actually still alive in Boston at age 103, I believe, but since they were divorced at least 60 years ago, I doubt if she is his "estate". The two oldest children are *twins*, so which one of *them* is the oldest, hehe? The pictures that I *lust* for, however, are some old black and white photos that I saw in an album at Waldo's house around 1963: Waldo and Hemingway, both of them totally naked, standing on a beach with the ocean behind them, each of them holding a conch shell in a strategic place. Priceless! I've emailed one of the twins twice to ask what happened to them, but he hasn't answered. I'll bet if CZ had an exclusive use to *those* that the site would get a couple of hits! Portrait of Dr. Johnson

I've uploaded a portrait I found at the Gutenberg Project. http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Image:Portrait_of_Samuel_Johnson.jpg

The same portrait at WP is in their Commons and is a brighter version of the same PD portrait. Here's the WP site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Samuel_Johnson_by_Joshua_Reynolds.jpg

I dunno what to do about WP Commons pix; should we just leave the present one in CZ or bring in the other, or what? Thanks! Hayford Peirce 12:46, 7 October 2007 (CDT)

You can upload the version from WP, all someone did is lighten it, and not change anything in the description.
Which CC pic?

Thanks for the tip, I've put in the brightend image. I dunno what you mean by "which CC pic?" Creative Commons? Hayford Peirce 15:13, 7 October 2007 (CDT)

Can you confirm or deny that the image bug is indeed quashed?

Moving Contents Box to other side of the page

Seems to me that a while ago someone (you, I thought) told someone else how to put a simple thingee like {xright}} onto the Contents Box on some pages in order to move it around. I meant to make a note of the instructions but now I can't find them. Can you help, please? Hayford Peirce 15:16, 7 October 2007 (CDT)

licensing question

One of my college buddies has a really good eye for photography and a great camera to go with it. I sent him an email and we agreed to a set of terms under which he grants me permission to release his works under a creative commons license (by-nc-nd). Essentially, we agreed to a contract stipulating which photos I'm allowed to release (no people pictured, inform him whenever I use a photo, etc.). Do you think I need to upload those terms somewhere or is that a private contract? I want to make sure that reusers know that they can't take just any photo from his website, because he gave me permission to release them individually and on a case by case basis only. --Joe Quick (Talk) 22:19, 7 October 2007 (CDT)

Those sound like public terms (I bet!). I believe stephen has gone a great length to set up a system by which we can include as much information possible for media, and this sounds like a perfect use really. --Robert W King 22:22, 7 October 2007 (CDT)
Robert's got it. This needs to be documented at Image_talk:Image name.jpg/Permission. However, I am unsure whether your freind understands that anyone anywhere will, in perpetuity, be able to use the images from Citizendium under the CC-by-nc-nd. Just make sure he does. But as that CC license is called "the advertising CC license", I'd hope he'd think that a good thing. :-)  —Stephen Ewen (Talk) 22:40, 7 October 2007 (CDT)
I have I think a great brainstorm idea here, inspired by this, one of the type that will work to give the type of incentive for high quality photographers to release excellent photos at CZ. It's especially applicable if there will be, say, at least a dozen images on CZ by this semi-pro photographer. Let's say his name is Goku Jones. What we do is create Category:Photos by Goku Jones and tag every image by him with the category and link to it in the "Related images" section of {{Image_notes4}}. Then, at the category page, we allow the photographer to make it his "CZ Photography Page". See where I am going with this and why?  —Stephen Ewen (Talk) 00:31, 8 October 2007 (CDT)
Well, I'm not so sure that it does belong at Image_talk:Image name.jpg/Permission. My thoughts about that are what triggered the question. He has given me permission to release his photos under a CC license (yes, he know what that entails - it was part of our conversation). The photo information is simply Template:Cc-by-nc-nd-3.0. If the information belongs anywhere, I was thinking it ought to be on a protected subpage of my userspace. But so long as I honor the contract between him and myself, there is no need for the public to know the terms of the agreement - they need only know that it has been released as CC-BY-NC-ND. --Joe Quick (Talk) 11:56, 8 October 2007 (CDT)

You know, I got to thinking that maybe we shouldn't be using/abusing Template: so much, maybe just using Image:blahblah.jpg/Credit should be sufficient, right? --Robert W King 01:13, 8 October 2007 (CDT)

Unless I am mistaken, using template space is the only way to make the credit of an image appear the same in all its iterations in articles. Consistency is very important and a mechanism for lacking it has been a criticism of the idea. This remedies that. BTW, for a proposal about the above, see http://forum.citizendium.org/index.php/topic,1268.msg10543.html#msg10543.  —Stephen Ewen (Talk) 02:32, 8 October 2007 (CDT)
I like that system, Steve. It seems like a lot more work for the uploader than it should be and I've had some ideas rolling around in my head about how to streamline it but they aren't fully developed yet, so I'm going to hold off on tests for now. I'm waiting for another "Aha!" moment like I had with the priority list template. --Joe Quick (Talk) 11:56, 8 October 2007 (CDT)
It's moved to http://forum.citizendium.org/index.php/topic,1269.0.html  —Stephen Ewen (Talk) 13:53, 8 October 2007 (CDT)
Just realized that I was a little confused earlier. My post just above (about improvements) was in reference to the new system for crediting photos in the article space. I like the new proposal that Steve linked to too, but wasn't referring to that in the original comment. --Joe Quick (Talk) 14:23, 8 October 2007 (CDT)

Waldo painting

Yes, I saw what you had done -- sorry, I hadn't realized that my upload was so large: it was *supposed* to be a lot smaller, but maybe I mixed up the files I had sitting around in a folder. And, yes, the image is somewhat brighter. I had fiddled around myself with that before uploading it but couldn't get it to my satisfaction, so finally said the hell with it. My Time cover is just about like what I see on the screen now, at least in the *large* image that you uploaded. Many thanks! In any case, I think I'm primarily interested in the cover as both a Time Mag. cover *and* an example of Waldo's work. Frankly, I think it's a pretty minor example, so I don't think it would be worth editing it out to use on its own. When someone *else* writes a Hemingway article, however, this cover could be stuck in that article. I think that I put it into the WP Hemingway article a long time ago and their image fascists have so far left it alone.... Hayford Peirce 17:47, 8 October 2007 (CDT)

I can't believe you didn't want to use Chicken Copyright for that. Sheesh. --Robert W King 21:16, 9 October 2007 (CDT)

blockquotes

Thanks for cleaning things up! Funny, I *tried* for a long time to use blockquotes (copying them from other articles) but couldn't make them work. The first one would be fine, then the second one would indent the rest of the article, the third one would indent the article even more, and so forth. I tried positioning them in different ways but the result was always the same, so I went back to using the Colons to indent the quotations. What do you think I was doing wrong? Maybe I should have clicked on the blockquote thingee in the Special Characters instead? But I have done cut and paste stuff on the ref and other special characters in the past with no problems.... Hayford Peirce 17:21, 13 October 2007 (CDT)

Sounds like you may have forgotten one tiny detail that makes all the difference: you have to close the blockquote. Compare the first and second blockquote tags:

<blockquote> Your long quote goes here. </blockquote>

—Stephen Ewen (Talk) 17:31, 13 October 2007 (CDT)

Yup, that's exactly it! I forgot to use the </block at the end, I was just copying the <block from the beginning. Geez! Hayford Peirce 23:56, 13 October 2007 (CDT)

Re "wikiconverters": Thanks, and question

Stephen: Thanks for establishing a place on my Talk page where volunteer 'wikiconverters', as you call them, can sign up. Clearly I should have thought of that. You have made it easier for me to put out calls for volunteers.

The question: Did you volunteer? Not a hint. Any suggestions of individuals to specifically target?

P.S. I downloaded Zotero and ran through several demos. Definitely looks promising. If you work with it and learn the specifics of creating bibliographic items in the MediaWiki [1] style, please pass it on. I'll do the same if I come to it sooner. Thanks for calling attention to Zotero, as it has many helpful features for scholars.

I wonder if the funders of Zotero would consider helping fund Citizendium. --Anthony.Sebastian (Talk) 18:44, 14 October 2007 (CDT)

Upload wizard

It looks great! If you're taking it in the direction that I think you are, this is going to be an enormously helpful tool to new and experienced contributors alike. We should do something similar for article creation - the current instructions are pretty clear but it still looks complicated. The upload wizard takes a pretty complex process and shows just how easy it is. Joe Quick 12:41, 15 October 2007 (CDT)

Thanks, and the idea to make for article creation is great!
Now if only I could figure how to get the wizard to work. Any idea what I am missing that is preventing this from working - preventing the index.php? or wiki? page from showing the entries I have made at MediaWiki:Licenses/ownwork?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Uploadtext/en-ownwork

I'm stumped. Maybe I am missing something.
Stephen Ewen (Talk) 12:49, 15 October 2007 (CDT)
Dunno. I suspect the problem is somewhere in Special:Upload but I can't see the source for that page. I would guess that it's having an issue with the "uselang" bit but I would have to tinker in order to even have a chance of figuring it out.
BTW, something strange is going on with my signature. Did the signature section of your preferences disappear too? Joe Quick 13:14, 15 October 2007 (CDT)

Baffled by adding credit to images

Hi, Steve, I uploaded a new Waldo picture to the bottom of the Waldo Peirce article but am totally unable to get the credit line to work. I know that you corrected three or four others in this article already but I am unable to see what you did to change them to make them appear with the credit line. To me, everything I see in the new picture is identical to how the others appear. What am I doing wrong here? Hayford Peirce 12:24, 17 October 2007 (CDT)

Fixed. Just bear the difficulty a bit longer and ask for help as needed. Stuff is gonna start getting much more user-friendly, as easy a copying and pasting in most cases. The first step is to finish CZ:Upload-Wizard. Stephen Ewen 13:14, 17 October 2007 (CDT)
Thanks! I guess that what you are saying is that there was/is a bug somewhere in the uploading process and that the problem was not caused by something that *I* was doing.... When the Wizard is finished, I'm sure that it'll be great! Hayford Peirce 13:20, 17 October 2007 (CDT)

Creating a photo gallery

Is there anywhere that explains how to create a gallery? I've got a bunch of pictures for the Bolognese sauce article, but, like French fries with its gallery, I think they should be in gallery form. Thanks! Hayford Peirce 16:11, 17 October 2007 (CDT)

If you give me a spell I'll make some templates for you that will make it super easy for you to make great galleries. Other than that the best thing to do is snatch the code at the Ff gallery. Stephen Ewen 16:24, 17 October 2007 (CDT)
I think I'll wait -- If I tried a grab and snatch I'd probably get arrested! Hayford Peirce 16:59, 17 October 2007 (CDT)

Thanks for volunteering for wikiconverting

Any ideas what file formats we should accept? Any other idea about this human wikiconverter project?. Image:Flag of Angolia.gif

Could you move it to its proper name, please? Is it even possible to move images, or would it have been just as easy for me to copy it and re-upload it under the right name? Joe Quick 02:46, 18 October 2007 (CDT)

Oh, it would be just phenomenal if Mediawiki allowed moving of images to descriptive or better names. The only way to do it is reupload it with a better name and delete the old. Still scratchin' my head over the silliness of that, but. Stephen Ewen 03:11, 18 October 2007 (CDT)
Hmm, okay. I can think of a couple of arguments for not allowing people to move images around, but I can't think of any good arguments for it. I'll get it myself after class; right now, I have to run. Joe Quick 09:29, 18 October 2007 (CDT)

Image copyright issue

Stephen, I modified the image file of the periodic table [periodictable.jpg], which is lacking info other than the claim that it is some sort of public domain. It was put there by Robert Tito. Anyway, I have assumed that if it is PD then it can be changed, which I have done. But I had problems with what to put as the license. The new image is at http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Image:Periodictable_V2.jpg . Sorry to bother you with this, but the old image is terrible and I cannot read it! --Martin Baldwin-Edwards 20:55, 18 October 2007 (CDT)

Okay, I'll check it out during image rounds tonight. :) Stephen Ewen 21:00, 18 October 2007 (CDT)

template creation

You created all six of them *just* as I was creating #1! How baffling! Thanks. The gallery, creation is harder than I thought -- I can use your gallery template to bring in the individual pictures, but then I can't figure out how to turn them into a gallery box.... Hayford Peirce 13:58, 19 October 2007 (CDT)

Just copy and paste the following and replace the names of the images with yours, add descriptions, and fiddle with the width and lines variables.

{{Gallery

turning a gallery into an image

It looks to me in the French fries article that the gallery image comes from something called [xImage:French fries gallery.jpg]]. I've now created the Bolognese sauce/Gallery with some additions by you, but I'm *still* completely at sea as how this gallery gets introduced into the Bolognese sauce article itself. Hayford Peirce 15:35, 19 October 2007 (CDT)

Ah, I see -- very simple. I thought that I tried that once but maybe I didn't. In any case, this appears to be a different technique from what was used in the French fry article. Well, as long as this is the standard way to do it, I ought to be able to master it. Thanks! Hayford Peirce 15:55, 19 October 2007 (CDT)
Yes, the idea is that this will become the standardized template for image galleries. The guts underneath may still undergo some tweaks, but will always be as easy to place as it is now.  :-)
That really is awesome. Is there a way to center the images in the overall table or make the table "shrink" or "compress" to the max width of the pictures? --Robert W King 16:06, 19 October 2007 (CDT)
I just centered them with simple html. :-) I'd love to figure out how to shrink them to one line, two, etc. Stephen Ewen 16:08, 19 October 2007 (CDT)

mistake?

I looked in your contribution history, and found Archive:Media Credit Lines within Articles, and have complied with its instructions.
FWIW, I thought the credit was showing up on instances of the casio image because of what I did. But it was because of what you did. I dunno if you realize it, but you didn't really explain what you had done. That was kind of confusing.
