Eighth United States Army is currently the senior U.S. Army headquarters in the Republic of Korea (ROK) (i.e., South Korea); its commander is "dual-hatted" as the commander of United States Forces Korea (USFK). While it was a large command during the Korean War, with changing conditions on the Korean Peninsula, and the high quality of the ROK military forces, it is a headquarters with a good many specialized units that indeed would be needed in a surge, but has only one combat division.

In the Second World War, it was one of the two field armies under Douglas MacArthur, commanded by Gen. Robert Eichelberger.

Joint US-ROK Units

The two Combat Support Coordination teams each link a ROK Army to the Combined Forces Ground Component, arranging aviation, all-source intelligence, target acquisition, air defense, fire support, logistics, and communications.

Combat Support Coordination Team (CSCT) #1

Supports Combined Forces Command (CFC) by providing the coordination link to First Republic Of Korea Army (FROKA).

Combat Support Coordination Team 3

Supports Combined Forces Command by providing a coordination link between Third Republic of Korea Army (TROKA).

UNC Security Battalion-Joint Security Area

UNC Security Battalion- Joint Security Area is composed of both ROK and U.S. military. The unit's mission include providing security in the JSA, manning Observation Post Ouellette in the Demilitarized Zone, and running the PanMunJom tour program. The unit is also responsible for the security and civil affairs of Tae Song Dong, the only Korean village within the Demilitarized Zone.

2nd Infantry Division

The 2ID is the major U.S. ground combat unit in Korea, headquartered at Camp Red Cloud, Uijongbu.

35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade

The 35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, headquartered at Osan Air Base, stands “Ready In Defense" of Commander UNC/CFC designated assets. 35th ADA Brigade employs both the PATRIOT and the Avenger Air and Missile Defense Systems. The Brigade has units located in Camp Casey, Suwon, Osan, Kunsan, and Gwangju.

Special Operations Forces Liaison Element-Korea (ALE-K)

Based at Camp Coiner in Seoul, ALE-K is a forward deployed logistics planning and coordination element for U.S. Army Special Operations Command.

Support

19th Theater Support Command Emblem19th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary)

19th ESC is the logistic support arm of 8th Army with the mission of sustaining combat power throughout the peninsula. Its headquarters is located on Camp Henry in Daegu, with subordinate commands located in each of the Army's four areas of operation on the peninsula.

1st Signal Brigade

The 1st Sig Bde is headquartered in Yongsan with units throughout Korea. 1st Sig Bde provides strategic and tactical communications, broadcast television and radio, and information management to USFK and component command headquarters in the ROK.

501st Military Intelligence Brigade

The 501st MI Brigade is subordinate to the U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command providing intelligence and security support to headquarters, EUSA. It is comprised of the brigade staff elements and four battalions with remote elements throughout Korea.

Among other sensors, it operates RC-12 GUARDRAIL and Airborne Reconnaissance Low platforms. While these are due to be replaced by a future Airborne Common Sensor, they provide signals intelligence (SIGINT), imagery intelligence (IMINT), and synthetic aperture radar/moving target indicator (SAR/MTI) mission payloads.

524th Military Intelligence Battalion

524th MI Battalion's mission is to provide counterintelligence and human-source intelligence to the joint and combined war fighter.

18th Medical Command

18th MEDCOM, headquartered in Yongsan with subordinate units located throughout Korea. It both has a theater-wide responsibility for coordinating Army medical support, as well s controlling the assigned and attached medical units in the theater.

29th Medical Detachment (Veterinary)

Clinics of the 129th Med Det (VM) at Yongsan and Camp Walker along with elements of the 106th Med Det (VS), provides comprehensive veterinary medical treatment for your pets throughout Korea. The 106th has clinics at Camp Red Cloud, Osan Air Base and Camp Hiahlea. The Yongsan Veterinary Treatment Facility serves as the medical and surgical referral center for the peninsula, though outlying facilities are equipped to handle many clinical procedures.

175th Finance Command

175h FINCOM in Yongsan provides appropriated and nonappropriated fund accounting services and finance support to soldiers, civilian employees and family members in theater, directs the overseas banking program, and provides staff finance and accounting policy advice and operational guidance.

Units with responsibilities inside and outside Korea

19th Military Police Battalion (Criminal Investigation Division)

The 19th MP Battalion (CID) supports commanders extending from the International Date Line to the Indian sub-continent by conducting Army, Joint and Combined criminal investigations of serious, sensitive or special interest matters, and criminal intelligence, logistics security, counter-drug, anti-terrorism, force protection and protective services operations in support of U.S. Forces Korea, Eighth U.S. Army, and U.S. Army Japan.

Logistic Support Element Far East (DSAFE)

The Command, responsible for Korea and the Pacific Rim, is headquartered at Camp Market, with subordinate Logistic Assistance Offices at: Camps Casey, Red Cloud, Henry, Humphrey's, Carroll, Long, Page, Stanley and Eagle.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Far East District

The Far East Engineer District is the Department of Defense Design and Construction Agent for Korea. The district is headquartered in Seoul with offices throughout the peninsula.
