In medicine, urinary catheterization is "employment or passage of a catheter into the urinary bladder (urethral catheterization) or kidney (ureteral catheterization) for therapeutic or diagnostic purposes.[1]

Complications

Urinary tract infection

Regarding short-term catheterization, a systematic review by the Cochrane Collaboration concluded that antiseptic impregnated catheters reduce urinary tract infections.[2]

Regarding long-term catheterization, a systematic review by the Cochrane Collaboration cncluded it is not clear what type of catheterization best prevents complication by urinary tract infections.[3]
