Being commissioned in the U.S. Navy in July 2009, the USS Jason Dunham (DDG-109) is a Flight IIA Burke-class destroyer], named for the first Marine to receive, posthumously, the Medal of Honor for actions in Iraq.[1]. Her sponsor is Dunham's mother, Debra, and GEN (ret.) Michael Hagee, former Commandant of the Marine Corps, will speak. A piece of Dunham's helmet will be sealed in the mast.

Commander M. Scott Sciretta is the designated first captain. She will serve in the United States Pacific Command but has not been assigned to an operational unit.

As a member of the fourth group of enhancements within Flight IIA, the ship will have enhanced AN/SPY-1(D) radar and AEGIS battle management system Baseline 7.1. Another enhancement will be the AN/WLD-1 Remote Minehunting System. Second-group ships had their guns enhanced to 5"-62 caliber gun with AN/SYQ-27 Naval Fire Control System (compatible with Army Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System (AFATDS) and JTIDS Link 16).
