The Mississippi River, at more than 2300 miles in length, is the longest river in the United States of America and North America. It originates in Lake Itasca in Minnesota and meanders southward through the heart of the country, joining with several tributary rivers including the Missouri River and the Ohio River, before reaching the Gulf of Mexico. It forms the world's fourth longest river system.
