Primary election: June 8

Following the passing of the deadline for candidate filing for the June 8 primary election, it appears that Sen. John Thune will be unopposed as no Democrat filed for the office. It is still possible that he will have opposition in the November general election if a candidate files nominating petitions with sufficient signatures to make the ballot and does so by the early June deadline. Such a candidate would have to be listed as an independent candidate on the ballot<ref>[http://www.rapidcityjournal.com/news/article_c03b9dc4-3e0a-11df-bb50-001cc4c002e0.html ''Strolling back to the Senate?
