The 53rd Presidential election in U.S. history, the 2000 United States presidential election was a close contest between the winning George W. Bush (Republican Party (United States)) and Al Gore (Democratic Party (United States)). While Patrick Buchanan (U.S. Reform Party) and Ralph Nader (U.S. Green Party) were not serious competitors, it was generally accepted they took votes away from Gore. Gore did win the popular vote while Bush won the Electoral College.
