Narcissus [r]: From Greek mythology, he was a beautiful youth who fell in love with his own reflection, and he pined away. It is the origin of the term narcissism, meaning a destructive non-productive form of self-love. Source: Elizabeth Vandiver, Classics scholar, authority on Greek mythology and Greek tragedy, including the Iliad, Odyssey, Aeneid, Homer, and Virgil. This definition is based on her course Classical Mythology for The Teaching Company.
