The principal target of China's 1984 invasion of Vietnam in the Third Indochina War, Ha Giang Province is on the border between the two countries. It is the northernmost part of Vietnam.

Cao Bang Province forms its western side. Tuyen Quang, and Yen Bai Provinces are to the south, and Lao Cai Province is on the southwest.

Its capital, Ha Giang City, was the apparent target of the Chinese invasion, which held it for approximately one month.
