In medicine, urinary catheterization is "employment or passage of a catheter into the urinary bladder (urethral catheterization) or kidney (ureteral catheterization) for therapeutic or diagnostic purposes.[1]

Urinary tract infection
Regarding short-term catheterization, a systematic review by the Cochrane Collaboration concluded that antiseptic impregnated catheters reduce urinary tract infections.[2]
Regarding long-term catheterization and prevention of urinary tract infections, systematic reviews by the Cochrane Collaboration have concluded:
- It is not clear what type of catheterization is best.[3]
- It is not clear what methods of intermittent catheterization are best.[4]
