Cefmetazole is a second-generation cephalosporin type of antibiotic medication. Like other cephalosporins and penicillins, cefmetazole reacts with penicillin-binding proteins within bacterial cells, thereby inhibiting cell wall synthesis.
Chemistry
The IUPAC name of cefmetazole is (6R,7S)-7-[[2-(cyanomethylsulfanyl)acetyl]amino]-7-methoxy-3-[(1-methyltetrazol-5-yl)sulfanylmethyl]-8-oxo-5-thia-1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-ene-2-carboxylic acid. It has a chemical formula of C15H17N7O5S3 and a molecule mass of 471.5340. It is an antibiotic compound due to the presence of the core beta-lactam structure common to all cephalosporins. The reactive lactam structure reacts with penicilin-binding proteins within bacteria by an acylation reaction of the beta-lactam.
