My name is Michael John Slattery; I’m working as a Managing Engineer/Project Manager in Rochester, NY, USA.

I was born April 20, 1973 in Rochester, NY, I'll say that my early years (prior to 1991) were without any notable events, not to mention I would probably just like to forget them anyhow... Most of my high school years were spent in isolation, a "geek" by majority rule, but I found my interests in horses, electronics, ham radio, and hiking/camping in the high peaks region of the Adirondacks kept me happy. In 1991, I graduated E.J. Wilson High, Spencerport, NY. I was accepted to Clarkson and Rochester Institute of Technology. I made the choice to attend RIT that fall.

My peers would say I "thoroughly enjoyed" the next year, doing everything but going to class... needless to say I failed out of RIT due to my poor academic status, hey I really never wanted to go to college anyhow... Knowing everything about the world, as any young man would, I decided to join the workforce... Through the various jobs over the next year, TOPS Floor Maintenance (janitor), Plastic Pellet Refill Technician (filling injection molding machine hopper), Harris RF Communications Assembly Line (parts insertion) and more the same, I learned a new lesson, the value of education.

In 1993 I enrolled at Monroe Community College in the AAS Computer Technology degree program. Early on I found myself bored with the core competencies of the program. In 1994, George Fazikas, the chair of the Computer Technology department, told me of an opportunity to work for the Equipment Management department of Monroe Community College. I was hired as a part-time professional by Dale Mallory, Director of Equipment Management. The timing could not have been better; the department was making radical changes from general equipment management (everything from chalk, desks, to computers) to focusing on computers, networks, and smart classrooms. At the same time, key employees in other departments supporting computers and networks were leaving the college. With these changes I was able to learn extensive skills in the computer and network areas. In April 1995, I applied and was hired as a full-time employee with the position of Network Specialist. My responsibilities included:

• Active monitoring and support of Multi-Vendor Ethernet backbone spanning several building at four sites
• Remote administration of network devices for troubleshooting and optimization of Ethernet backbone
• Lead project management for political projects and departments
• Provide 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (24x7) technical support and direction for the college’s top two administrative
• Create procedure and standard documents for adding devices to Ethernet backbone. Including naming conventions, typical setups, contact and support information etc
• Researched, evaluated, and recommended all network related hardware and software components
• Design and implementation team for college-wide migration from Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 to Microsoft Windows 2000 and Active Directory
• Design and implementation team for college-wide Firewall
• Develop and implement college wide Microsoft Exchange email system for 3000 administrative users and 14,000 unique students per year
• Design, manage, and implement a new standard for the college’s network IP addresses, DNS naming conventions, DHCP, BOOTP and WINS implementation
