Welcome Page

Welcome to the Citizendium! We hope you will contribute boldly and well. Here are pointers for a quick start. You'll probably want to know how to get started as an author. Just look at CZ:Getting Started for other helpful "startup" links, and CZ:Home for the top menu of community pages. Be sure to stay abreast of events via the Citizendium-L (broadcast) mailing list (do join!) and the blog. Please also join the workgroup mailing list(s) that concern your particular interests. You can test out editing in the sandbox if you'd like. If you need help to get going, the forums is one option. That's also where we discuss policy and proposals. You can ask any constable for help, too. Me, for instance! Just put a note on their "talk" page. Again, welcome and have fun! Hayford Peirce 18:38, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

joining the Forums

Hi, Mary, you'll probably want to join the Forums, where most of our discussions take place. Because of our (weird) wiki structure, you will have to reapply to join, but it's pretty easy. Just follow the instructions at:

http://forum.citizendium.org/index.php

If you're interested in Editors, expertise, etc., and discussions thereof, you might look at the sub-forums of:

http://forum.citizendium.org/index.php/board,6.0.html

and

http://forum.citizendium.org/index.php/board,2.0.htm

Real name needed

Hi, Mary, I've just rejected your application to join the Forums -- you have to register as Mary Ash, not MA. Sorry, but I can't change your name once you've joined, so you'll have to do the application over again. Thanks! Hayford Peirce 16:42, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Talk page of Unidentified flying object

Hi, Mary:

There have been a number of comments posted on Talk:Unidentified flying object and please feel free to respond to any of them. It would be helpful. Milton Beychok 19:29, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Mary, to respond to your question, I don't know what the inuse tag is and thus can't comment on it. If you want to develop text without interference, you can create User: Mary Ash/Sandbox and work on it there uninterrupted. Once something is in mainspace, however, the CZ custom is that it's
  1. Open to editing by others
  2. Large deletions, as opposed to additions, need to be discussed first on the Talk Page.

Personal sandbox

I agree with Hayford and with Howard, that creating a new article is best done in one's personal sandbox. When finished there, it can than be copied and pasted into the Namespace (also known as Mainspace) using the "Start Article" link in the left-navigation column of any CZ page.

Would you like me to create a personal sandbox for you? Just let me know and it will be done. Milton Beychok 20:24, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Your personal sandbox has been created. There is a blue link to it on the upper left-hand of your user page. Just click on it and it takes you to your sandbox.
Would you now like me to copy the entire Unidentified flying object article to your sandbox where you can work on it without interruption unless you specifically ask people to visit your sandbox and offer comments? Then when you are ready, you can replace the existing article content with the content from your sandbox. Milton Beychok 22:05, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Before anything gets copied or moved, please take a look at my latest comment on the Talk page at UFO. Certainly the material could be *copied* to a Sandbox, but it could not be Moved, at least not in my understanding. And if it were merely *copied*, then rewritten extensively, how would it then be reintegrated with the existing Mainspace article? Until these questions are settled, I think you'd better hold off. Wow! Too much collaboration and too much tutoring?

Looking over the talk page of Unidentified flying object, I know it must seem to you like many of us (myself included) have landed on your shoulders with too much verbiage. Please don't get discouraged!! I had much the same experience when I joined CZ about 2-3 years ago. It is all meant to be helpful and constructive. It takes a while to learn our CZ style, customs and policies ... no one is expected to be letter perfect when they are new to CZ. Once again, don't be discouraged! An if you want that personal sandbox, just let me know. Milton Beychok 20:58, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

restoration of your biography

Hi, Mary, I have restored your biographical items on your User page. Perhaps you deleted it by mistake when you were making other edits and/or links.

Whereas Citizens are generally free to edit their Talk pages in almost any ways they want, the User Page guidelines at http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/CZ:User_Pages clearly state that:

"All Citizens are required to maintain biographies on their userpages. Why? Because we are taking real-world responsibility for our contributions and making real-world relationships with each other. A name by itself conveys little information to others. The purpose of user pages is to be helpful to the development of Citizendium. Therefore, authors' user pages will be regulated by the Citizendium's constabulary." Hayford Peirce 17:51, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

Restoring your Talk page

There is no {{Archive}} template in Citizendium. All that did was to delete your Talk page. If you want help with how archiving is done on Citizendium, ask Peter Schmitt or someone else to help you. Meanwhile, I have restored your Talk page for you, since we are not allowed to just delete our Talk pages. Milton Beychok 18:07, 24 July 2010 (UTC)
