I was a music critic for the Village Voice from 1986 to 2005, and I am an associate professor of music at Bard College, where I've taught since 1997. I've published three books on American classical music:

My B.Mus. (1977) is from Oberlin, and my M.Mus (1981) and D.Mus (1983) are from Northwestern University. I've published more than 2500 articles, most on contemporary music, for more than 40 publications, including the New York Times, Perspectives of New Music, Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart, Grove Dictionary of Music, the Chicago Tribune, and many others. In 2003 the American Music Center gave me a Letter of Distinction for my service to American music, along with Steve Reich, Wayne Shorter, and George Crumb. I also won a 2003 Peabody award for my script for the radio program American Mavericks. I have three CDs of my own music commercially available, with another coming soon on the New Albion label. I am writing a piano concerto for the Orkest de Volharding in Amsterdam, which will premiere Oct. 1, 2007. I write the PostClassic blog at ArtJournal.com, which has been ranked (at Technorati) as the 5th most influential classical-music blog.
