Jon Wolthuis was born in Comstock Park, Michigan and attended Rockford High School, graduating in the top 10 in his graduating class. After graduating from high school in 1980, he enrolled in electrical engineering at General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan. He joined Delta Tau Delta Fraternity while attending GMI, and graduated from GMI in 1984.
After graduating from college, he was employed as an electrical engineer at the Fisher Body Division of General Motors Corporation. He moved to PEC Technologies in Holland, Michigan in 1989.
Wolthuis served from 1988 to 1998 on the Planning Commission for the city of Wyoming, Michigan. He chaired the commission for two of those years.
In 1996 Wolthuis founded Ascend Systems Inc., an electrical engineering design firm, located in Grandville, Michigan.
