Jay Eckles is the Associate Director of Information Services at Rhodes College. His responsibilities include institutional research, managing data reporting and warehousing, managing special projects, and assisting with the strategic management of Rhodes' merged Information Services organization. He has also served as an adjunct instructor in the Management Information Systems department at the University of Memphis, teaching introductory undergraduate courses. Prior to joining Rhodes in 2005, Jay worked outside higher education in the finance and retail industries as a software engineer and team leader, including extensive leadership and participation in quality improvement initiatives. His specific areas of experience and expertise are web development and programming (HTML, Javascript, Java Servlets, JSP, ASP, CGI, Perl, C, etc.), Enterprise Resources Planning Systems (specifically PeopleSoft and Sungard Banner), databases (Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, MySQL), and quality improvement (Six Sigma). From about 1996 to 2005, Jay provided consulting services in these areas to a select number of clients and provided reviews on technical book proposals for Prentice-Hall PTR and Addison-Wesley Professional. He is the author of CGI Calendar, an open source project founded in 1997 and hosted on sourceforge.net. He is a member of the Society for Information Management, the IEEE Computer Society, the Association for Institutional Research (AIR), Southern AIR, Tennessee AIR, and formerly a member of Mensa. A Rhodes alumnus, he received his B.A. cum laude in Computer Science and Business Administration and went on to obtain his M.S. in Information Science from the Pennsylvania State University. He is a Christian, husband, and father, and he spends what little free time is left designing and building furniture, guitars, and mandolins.
