Biographical Note: George Georgantas.
I was born in Alexandria, Egypt on the 17th December 1954, of Greek parents and am married with two children. I am a Greek citizen.
Education
Part of my primary and my all of my secondary education was at Dale College, King William’s Town, South Africa from where I matriculated in 1971.
I attended the Andrew Fleming Hospital Nursing School in Salisbury Rhodesia from 1976 to 1979, and qualified as state registered nurse, winning the hospital shield and the state final award for best practical and theoretical student.
In 1981 I was awarded a scholarship to attend medical school in Greece, and after completing 12 months language I was enrolled in the Aristotle University Medical school in Thessalonica, Greece in September 1982. I was awarded the Degree of Medical Doctor in May 1989 with a good passmark.
I completed my 12 months of housemanship training at the Athens General military hospital from June 1989.
In December 1990 I began specialist Training in anaesthesia at the same hospital, and completed my training in May 1995 from the Municipal Hospital of Athens.
Work Experience
On matriculating in 1971 I joined the regular Army of then Rhodesia in the Army medical corps, and gained my first medical experience as a paramedic in both base hospitals and in the field during operations.
I attended the Andrew Fleming Nursing School from 1976 to 1979, and qualified as a state registered nurse at the start of 1979. I then held various posts within the medical corps until 1981 when I left Zimbabwe to attend university.
On completion of my housemanship and until commencing specialist training I worked at the Evangelistria private hospital in Athens as a resident doctor.
After completion of specialist training I was employed in an intensive care unit at the Attica Hospital of Athens for a period of six months awaiting my district service post.
From the October 1995 until March 1996 I was employed in district service in Tinos Island in Greece. This was general practice in a rural setting.
I returned to Zimbabwe in April 1996 and was employed as an anaesthetist initially in government service and later in private practice until March 2002.
In March 2002 I joined the staff of the Mersey Hospital in Tasmania as a consultant anaesthetist until March 2003.
From June this year I am employed at the Limnos General Hospital in Greece as a consultant anaesthetist.
