The New Romantic was director Carly Stone's first feature film.[1] The film premiered at the 2018 South by Southwest Festival, where Stone was awarded Special Jury Recognition for First Feature.[1]

The film explores the relatively new phenomenon of young women, described as "sugar babies" who seek to be given allowances by older wealthy men, known as "sugar daddies".[2] In return for the allowances the sugar babies go on dates with their mentors, or meet them for discrete sexual liaisons.

Blake, a college senior, and author of her college newspaper's sex column, played by Jessica Barden, decides to follow the example of another student, played by Camila Mendes, and try out being a sugar baby herself.[3]

I go to bed pretty early in Toronto and I’ve been going to bed at 3 a.m. Before that, I hadn’t seen midnight in a long time.'mirror

Can she figure out what she really wants before the end of her senior year of college? And will she remain, as she puts in her column, a "hopeless romantic," even if she profits from being a sugar baby?” mirror
