ATTEMPT TO CONTACT MAN WHO SAYS HE OWNS RIGHTS TO "DON THE BEACHCOMBER" ON JULY 3, 2007

At Tiki Central I found a guy who, a couple of years ago, claimed to own the rights to Don the Beachcomber, a Las Vegas restaurateur. But his website link doesn't work. As a member of Tiki Central, I sent the following email to him (he's called "vegasguy" but since it goes through the Tiki Central site, I don't know what his address really is, or if he'll ever get it.

Hello,

I'm an author of articles at CitizenDium, which is a new version of Wikipedia. I lived in Tahiti for many years and used to love going to the original Don the Beachcomber in Los Angeles. I've written the CitizenDium article about Don (and a number of his drinks). If you are indeed the owner of the copyright for various Don the Beachcomber uses, I would like to get formal permission from you to use the scanned images of this old (1959, probably) menu that I have put into the article. You can see them at:

http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Don_the_Beachcomber

CitizenDium is a NON-PROFIT organization attempting to create an on-line encyclopedia that is of a higher quality than Wikipedia. Images are an important part of any article, and we are attempting to always comply with the laws of copyright.

I hope to hear favorably from you.

Here's the Tiki Central site, but I *think* you have to become a member in order to get as far as I did -- maybe not:

http://www.tikiroom.com/

here's where there's some info about the Don the Beachcomber name:

http://www.tikiroom.com/tikicentral/bb/viewtopic.php?topic=16712&forum=1&vpost=283911

I can't seem to copy any of that info, but I used SnagIt to grab this much:

There's more info along the same lines....

If I don't hear from "vegasguy" I could, I suppose try looking at websites for the Hawaii drink book....

Thanks for your interest in this fairly recondite subject!

Best,

Hayford

Dear Ms. Beach,

Are you the Phoebe Beach who collaborated with Arnold Bitner on that wonderful book "Hawaii Tropical Rum Drinks & Cuisine by Don the Beachcomber"? I have owned it for several years now and love it -- I make one of the drinks, a Mai Tai, Navy Grog, or a Zombie, every two or three days and remember the wonderful old days at the Beachcomber restaurant in Hollywood in the 1950s and 1960s.

I would like to contact anyone who can give me information on the copyright title to "Don the Beachcomber", in order to get permission to use scanned images of old Don the Beachcomber restaurant menus for a non-profit online encyclopedia project.

PS -- when I lived in Tahiti I used to see a little sign by the side of the road in Moorea that said "Donn Beach" -- I had no idea that it was where the Beachcomber lived! I would give anything to have known so that I could have dropped by to say hello....Wikipedia.
