Dr. Pier Paul Overduin was born Canadian, acquired Dutch citizenship during his teenage years. He currently lives in Potsdam, Germany, and works at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research. His research focusses on the cryosphere, that part of the Earth which is frozen. He grew up in Ontario, Canada, the third of five children. Following high school, he studied chemistry (Bachelors), geography (Masters) and soil physics (Ph. D.). For all three degrees and between them, he spent time working in the field at high latitudes. This included the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, Alaska, central Siberia, Chukotka and Antarctica.
