Michael Carr received a B.A. in Physics and Mathematics from Kansas University (1969), an M.A. in Oriental Languages and Literatures from Kansas University (1975), and a Ph.D. in Oriental Studies and Linguistics from the University of Arizona (1979). He retired after teaching English and Linguistics at Otaru University of Commerce in Japan from 1980 to 1998, and is currently a freelance translator in Hawaii. His research interests include lexicography, Chinese and Japanese languages, linguistics, Daoism, and Buddhism.
