Joseph Bessie is presently a tenured professor of philosophy at the University of Wisconsin - Stout, in Menomonie, WI.


Dr. Bessie has worked in higher education for more than thirty-three years and has held positions at several colleges and universities. Some highlights prior to his UWS appointment include a short term as Provost at UWS, four years as the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Saint Martin's University in Lacey, WA (2009 - 2013), three years as the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Valley City State University in Valley City, ND (2006 - 2009), and a six year appointment as Dean of Instruction for Transfer Programs at Ridgewater College in Willmar, MN (2000 - 2006). For ten years prior he served as a philosophy professor and philosophy program coordinator at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, OK. Dr. Bessie's academic specializations include mathematical logic, the philosophy of science, and management ethics. He has produced a textbook and software in mathematical logic, articles in philosophy and the philosophy of science, and has many years of conference presentations and participation. He holds an M.B.A. in management from Southwest Minnesota State University, a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Minnesota, and a B.A. in philosophy and psychology from the University of California. As part of his professional development, he attended the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University in summer, 2008.
