Helena Barbas, born in Lisbon in 1951, is a Professor and Lecturer at the F.C.S.H., Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal, where she has been teaching, since 1987, Literary Theory and Comparative Literature – History of Aesthetical Ideas, Literature and the Arts, Literature and New Media.

At the F.C.S.H., Helena holds an MA in Comparative Literary Studies (1990) and gained a PhD in Portuguese Studies/Comparative Literature (1998) – «Mary Magdalene – Images and Shadows». She regularly supervises doctoral students.

In 2003, she attended some seminars of the Master of Applied Artificial Intelligence coordinated by Professor Luís Moniz Pereira, at the F.C.T. /U.N.L. (Caparica).

Helena Barbas´ present research interests are man-machine interaction, virtual characters/avatars and their characterization, the usage of AI decision models and agents behaviour for the making of digital persona and narratives. Presently she belongs to the «InStory Project» team, specializing on content development she is concentrating on mobile digital interactive narratives, and studying the consequences of the recent IT practices for Narratology /Literary theory.

Publications: Helena authored a book and several essays, translated theoretical texts, novels, drama and poetry. She has collaborated with diverse newspapers, magazines and with national TV cultural programs. She writes literary reviews for the national weekly broadsheet
