C. R. Tosh grew up on a farm located just outside Henry, Tennessee. He received his B.A. from Oberlin College, where he majored in Studio Art/Art History. After college, Mr. Tosh lived off-grid in western Kentucky for four years, before enrolling in the M.F.A. program at the University of Iowa. He received his M.F.A. in photography in 1981. After graduate school, Mr. Tosh worked as a free-lance photographer for several years, specializing in the photography of artwork for museums and artists. In 1987, Mr. Tosh changed gears, and enrolled in the University of Iowa School of Law, and received his J.D. in 1990. After law school, Mr. Tosh clerked for Iowa circuit court system from 1990-92. He moved to Eugene, Oregon in 1992, and taught legal writing at the University of Oregon School of Law from 1992-1994. He then entered private practice in Coos Bay, Oregon, and began building a local government practice, representing the cities of Coos Bay, Port Orford, Elkton, Glendale, as well as several special districts. He remained in practice in Coos Bay until 2002, when he moved to Salem, Oregon, where he was appointed city attorney. He continued to serve as city attorney for Salem until 2012, when he retired. Upon retirement he co-founded The Verona Studio, a small, black-box theater, presenting live performances of contemporary drama. He continues to serve as the artistic director for the Verona Studio, and also continues to exhibit photography on a regional and national level.
