Urban-type settlement (Russian: посёлок городского типа) is an official settlement status in Russia, Ukraine and some other countries of the former Soviet Union. Urban-type settlement is thus located in a niche between rural settlement (village) and town/city. Urban-type settlement is not necessarily larger than a rural-type settlement; the main difference is that the majority of urban-type settlement inhabitants work in economic sectors other than agriculture. The majority of urban-type settlements are industrial but there are also some resort urban-type settlements (thus inhabitants work in tourist services).
