A unit in the context of a military organization is generally a battalion-sized organization, although in practice it may also refer to a company-, squadron- or battery-sized organization if it is acting under an independent command.

A unit generally has one commander, the Commanding Officer, and is composed of sub-units. A military unit usually has one common identity, exemplified by both its name and its insignia, and operates under one headquarters.
