The thermosphere is the outermost layer of the Earth's atmosphere. It coincides with the heterosphere, where gases are stratified according to molecular weight. The thermosphere begins at an altitude of about 80 km.

The upper part of the thermosphere, beginning around 500 km, is the exosphere.
