[1] He was born in Pakistan, educated there and at Oxford University, and resides in the United Kingdom after criticizing the Pakistani government; he identifies as an "unwilling rebel".

A writer for the Guardian since the 1970s, he has also long been associated with the New Left Review.

Western relations with the Arab world

He has criticized the Western-led intervention in Libya, Operation ODYSSEY DAWN and Operation UNIFIED PROTECTOR, as "selective vigilantism". [2]
