Robert Mugabe (1924-) is the current President of Zimbabwe and leader of the Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF). He is the Republic of Zimbabwe's 2nd president, succeeding former President Canaan Banana in 1987. Prior to his presidency, he held the post of Prime Minister, effectively serving as Zimbabwe's national leader since 1980.

Early life

Robert Gabriel Karigamombe Mugabe was born on February 21, 1924 in the "Christian Village" at Kutama Mission in the Zvimba District, west of Salisbury in Southern Rhodesia, which had been established by Jesuit missionaries for Africans who had been baptised.
