Perth is the capital city of Western Australia. In 2006 it had a population of 1,445,078. It was founded on 11 June 1829 by James Stirling.

History

Before European settlement in 1829, Perth was the home to local Whadjuk Noongar native tribes for about 40,000 years. Perth was founded on 11 June 1829 by James Stirling. From 1831 relations with the local Aboriginals tensed, with the resistance warrior Yagan becoming an infamous figure amongst Western Australians of the time.

Western Australia has always been a secessionist state, voting down federation until concessions were made by the eastern states such as a railway line to Kalgoorlie. In 1933 Western Australia voted to secede from the federation, a request that was ignored by William Angwin, the Agent General to the United Kingdom of Western Australia.

Demographics

Perth is home to approximately 1,445,078 people, of which over 31% (452,888) were born overseas. A majority (just over one-half) of Perth's population identify as Christian, while 22% have no religious affiliation.
