The National Football League (NFL) is the highest-level professional league in the sport of American football. It was founded in 1920 and is based in New York City. The NFL currently (2019) has 32 member franchises based in cities throughout the USA. They operate in two divisions called the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC) from which the leading teams qualify for an end-of-season playoff tournament which culminates in the Super Bowl.
