The Mississippi River is the longest river in the United States and North America. It originates in Lake Itasca in Minnesota and flows mainly southward through the heart of the country, joining with several tributary rivers including the Missouri River and the Ohio River, before reaching the Gulf of Mexico. It forms the world's fourth longest river system.
