The Mississippi River is the second longest river in the United States, with total length of about 3770 km (2318 mi). It originates in Lake Itasca in Minnesota and flows mainly north-south through the heart of the country before emptying itself in the Gulf of Mexico. With the Missouri, it forms the world's fourth longest river system.
