London, Ontario, is the fifth most populous city in Ontario, Canada, after Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton and Kitchener. As of 2024 the city's population was over 400,000.
In 1793 John Graves Simcoe, the newly appointed first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, considered making London the capital of Upper Canada, hence the name "London". He named the river the site bordered the Thames River. However, York, on Lake Ontario was the final choice.
The Thames runs roughly parallel to the north shore of Lake Erie, and London is about one third of the way down its course.
