On the other hand, the majority felt that combat ships would be appropriate, some combat ships, and by quite a large plurality, the commission recommended that women not be assigned to ground combat. I certainly could see American women engaging in combat, like they have historically and traditionally in America as a last resort, last line of defense. I assume, like pioneer women did in their day, like the women of Leningrad did in their day, when you're protecting your home and hearth, when men are not available, women will defend.
