John F. Campbell is a major general in the United States Army, currently assigned as Deputy Director, Regional Operations, J-3, on the Joint Staff (U.S.). During the Surge campaign in the Iraq War, he was the primary U.S. operational commander in Baghdad, as Deputy Commanding General (Maneuver), 1st Cavalry Division/and Deputy Commanding General (Maneuver), Multi-National Division-Baghdad.

He commanded 1st Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division in the Afghanistan War (2001-). Earlier, he commanded a United States Army Special Forces Operational Detachment A and served on Special Forces staff.

MG Campbell is a graduate of the United States Military Academy, holds a MPA in Public Administration from Golden Gate University, and is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College.
