Help with server migration - citizendium.org email addresses

I am actively working on the migration from the 3 old servers to the 1 new one now (sorry it took so long, this is a real albatross).

One complication is the existence of mailing lists like constables@citizendium.org or other citizendium.org emails, and I would like to eliminate those or they should be replaced by addresses hosted somewhere else.

Right now simply shutting off the mailing lists, even if they were to be revived later, would likely break things on the wiki. For example, someone creating a new account apparently needs to be approved by a constable, and emails related to accounts use constables@citizendium.org as their sender address. Also that address and probably others like it are cited on wiki pages as the thing to contact for help.

I request help in this matter from savvy people.

Any needed addresses such as constables@citizendium.org need to be identified and replaced by, say, a Google hosted email list or address, and then key places in the wiki updated to refer to it, as soon as possible. If there are any places where a technician needs to change something, e.g. that constables@citizendium.org is emailed for approval when a user signs up, that would then need altering to the Google address.

Also any people that are savvy with Linux/Unix sysadmin and are willing to help with Citizendium in general, starting this migration, please let me know.

Thank you. -- Darren Duncan, 8th November 2014

Is it possible to retain constables@ and other inboxes as forwarding addresses? (Existing mail can be easily archived.) It would look odd if new users got their application responses directly from a Gmail account, especilly since non-free addresses are one way we use to help verify identities. It should be possible to retain those as forwarding addresses, yes, with more work. As I recall being told, a large part of the problem with having email addresses on our own system is the large amount of spam they get, which takes up a lot of storage space. I welcome further discussion on the matter of emails. Darren Duncan 22:33, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
I suggest installing Mailman on our server, so we can easily manage our lists ourselves. To avoid the spam problem, we should setup list moderation. I would volunteer as a list moderator, but am not technical enough to setup the software. Jens Mildner 20:17, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

Pages not displaying when logged-in on other wikis

I have submitted a bug report over database error messages that appear when I try to view pages on CZ wikis other than this one (e.g. the test wiki). When logged-in, no pages are viewable. The 'Random Page' link also returns an error when not logged-in. It doesn't seem to be happening on this wiki (fingers crossed it won't). John Stephenson 15:17, 27 September 2014 (UTC)

Greg has fixed this - thanks. John Stephenson 22:26, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

'Recent changes' sidebar links

I have added a link to the left-hand sidebar which sends you to a version of the 'Recent Changes' page which lists only edits to mainspace pages, i.e. articles. I found that the standard page was being flooded with forum comments, making actual editing more difficult. (The original link is now 'All Recent Changes'.) Unfortunately, article Talk page comments cannot be included under the new page. I'll remove/change/leave it as directed. John Stephenson 12:30, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

Move citizendium-L list to Google?

Presently, we have four mailing lists which are hosted by Purdue University: Citizendium-Tools, Citizendium-Editors, Citizendium-World and Citizendium-L. Of these, the first three are defunct and Citizendium-L is used for occasional announcements. At present, we only have control over Citizendium-L because the administrators of the other lists have not been active on the project for some time.

I suggest we move our announcement list to Google Groups, to protect ourselves against the possibility that Purdue might pull the plug (we have no communication with them at all as far as I know). We already have a Group for non-members and it would be easy to set up another one for anyone to subscribe to. The posts in all four existing lists can be downloaded by anyone as .zip files, so archiving is no problem. Additionally, Citizendium-L is archived on Gmane. Are there any objections or issues that you can think of for or against this? John Stephenson 17:09, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
