|notes        = The Arabian Gulf (Mar. 19, 2003) -- Aviation Ordnancemen aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) load a Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) onto a F/A-18C Hornet. JDAM's are guidance kits that convert existing unguided bombs into precision-guided "smart" munitions. The tail section contains an inertial navigational system (INS) and a global positioning system (GPS). JDAM improves the accuracy of unguided bombs in any weather condition. It is launched from any fighter or fighter-attack aircraft in the Navy's inventory. The Abraham Lincoln is deployed in support of Operation Southern Watch.
