Formally specified as IEEE 802.3u; first speed improvement over the original Ethernet 10 Mbps speed developed by the IEEE 802.3 project, operating at a nominal 100 Mbps speed; now the default speed of most PC interfaces although Gigabit Ethernet is increasingly common; autonegotiation to 10/100 speed is very widespread
