Why donate to the Citizendium?

Donations are tax-deductible for U.S. residents. The Citizendium is a project of Tides Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. (It will become fully independent next year.)

The world needs a more responsible, reliable free encyclopedia. The person who organized Wikipedia now wishes to do better with the Citizendium--which has already, after only six months, generated about 2,000 articles, organized hundreds of experts and over a thousand authors, and demonstrated the potential of a new model. With more funds, we can ramp up this worthy project even faster.

The Citizendium is unlike most charities, because its content is a public good designed to outlive even the life of the organization. Our license guarantees that. Our content will always be free for others to republish and rework. To support the Citizendium is to thus purchase high-quality content for the entire world, forever--that's no exaggeration.

There is much interest from many sectors about the whole idea of expert management of an open wiki system, in which users use their real names. This is an innovation worth supporting, because, as with Wikipedia, the Citizendium represents a new model of content production--this could benefit of thousands of businesses and organizations around the world.

Soon, supporting organizations will receive a sponsorship thank-you message at the bottom of Citizendium pages, in proportion to the amount that they contribute. A large donor will receive considerable publicity, since we have had considerable traffic--in April 2007 alone, over two million page views.

Finally, a donation to the Citizendium provides enormous "bang for the buck." Even a little will go a long way. The reason for this is that volunteers leverage the funds tremendously. Few projects of the activity and stature of the Citizendium could have survived for seven months on $40,000; the reason for this is that most of the people at work on the project are volunteers. The Citizendium is a genuine by-our-bootstraps, grassroots community effort. So even a small donation will have a large effect.

How to Donate

Monetary Donations

  • Online donations of any amount can be made by credit card by visiting our online donations page. You will have the choice to make either a one-time or recurring donation.
  • You can also donate the good old fashioned way by mailing a check or money order made payable to Citizendium Foundation/Tides Foundation; mail sanger@citizendium.org for the address. Please be sure to include the name and address (e-mail or postal) to which we can extend our gratitude and provide you with a receipt for tax purposes.

In-kind donations

Offers for in-kind donations of equipment or services should be submitted via e-mail to the Fundraising Assistant, Kelly Patterson who will then forward it to the appropriate parties.

Other ways that you can help

Buy books and other stuff (affiliate programs)

Citizendium is now participating in programs with both Amazon and Barnes & Noble that allow us to earn money for any purchases that are made by people clicking through to either site via Citizendium. This means you can help support the Citizendium with your everyday purchases through these retailers--and it won't cost you any extra!

It's easy!

When you plan to purchase goods through either Amazon or Barnes & Noble, instead of going directly to those websites, why not help the Citizendium by clicking through to them using the links below or on our book source page ? You can also reach the book source page by clicking on an ISBN for any book listed in an article reference section. Remember: when clicking through an ISBN, you don't have to purchase the precise book that is being referenced--you only need to reach Amazon or Barnes & Noble via Citizendium, and then get whatever you want. We've posted some additional search links below.

The Citizendium Foundation gets 6% of your purchase price--a good way to support us, if you use these companies.

There's always plenty of work to be done! If you haven't yet, we welcome you to join us and get started!

Helpful tips on donations

  • Donations to the Citizendium are tax deductible for U.S. residents.
  • You will be provided with a receipt via e-mail for all donations.
  • Many employers encourage charitable gifting by their employees by offering company matching donations. Check with your employer to see if your company participates in matching donations for eligible non-profit organizations.

Our thanks to you...

We are so very grateful to the many folks who have contributed to the Citizendium. You can view a list of our donors by clicking here.

Also, we are currently working with our technical team to establish a system in which we can publicly thank our donors by name at the bottom of each Citizendium page. The idea is to display a message randomly thanking these generous individuals that will change with each page view in proportion to the amount of their gift (For example, if the total donations that CZ has received was $10,000, an individual that donated $100 could expect to be named on 1% of all page views at that time).

This system will hopefully be up and running sometime in May. Don't worry- if you have already given to the Citizendium, your name will be included (unless you don't want to be- in that case, e-mail Kelly Patterson with your full name and donation amount). More details on this to come in the very near future.
