Bowdoin College is a is an independent, nonsectarian, coeducational residential, undergraduate liberal arts institution founded in 1794, located near Brunswick, Maine. It has approximately 1700 students. Perhaps its most distinguished alumnus and faculty member was Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, who became its President after returning from military leave in the American Civil War.

In American foreign service, journalism, and other fields, its alumni are found as commonly as those of better-known institutions.
