The 16"-45 caliber MK 6 naval gun was a U.S. battleship main cannon used on the North Carolina-class and South Dakota-class, but rejected in favor of the 16"-50 caliber MK 7 naval gun for the Iowa-class. Arguably, it was a rushed design, introduced when the Washington Naval Treaty was abrogated by Japan and there was a new arms race among battleships, which had been limited to 14" main guns.

These were the guns used successfully by USS Washington ((BB-56), during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, to sink IJN Kirishima.
