Incident

Lecture theatre fighting case

On 18 April 2018, a fight involving 3 students broke out at the lecture theatre. The video of the incident was also publicised on social media. In the video, a student dressed in a yellow and black striped shirt can be seen shouting aggressively, before he is confronted and briefly choked by another student in a black shirt. As a lecturer tries to stop the scuffle, the student in the yellow and black striped shirt continues his tirade, hurling vulgarities and gesturing at several students. A man in a red polo T-shirt trying to stop him but to no avail. Later, the student is seen picking a fight with another student wearing a red singlet.

The TP spokesperson responded to the incident and stated that: “A scuffle broke out involving three first year students, after one of them created a disturbance in the lecture theatre at about 11am yesterday. Staff who were present intervened and eventually calmed the students down. No one was injured.

All three students have been instructed to make themselves available to assist with the investigation. In addition to being counselled, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken where necessary.”

The student who dressed in a yellow and black striped shirt later told the news media that the male student in red clothing looked down on students from ITE.

Student involved in cheating

In December 2016, Temasek Polytechnic student Lee Chao Hunt, set up two accounts on Locanto.com to conduct scam. He used those accounts to advertise that he was looking for "friends with benefits" and expected to be paid. More than 10 men responded to his advertisements. Lee directed them to mobile messaging application WeChat, where he continued to chat with the victims under his female pseudonyms. He told the victims that he would send pornographic videos of "herself" having sex, and in some cases, promised to meet the victims for sex. He used those promises to lure them into transferring between S$150 to S$200 each to his bank account. The victims followed Lee's instructions and transferred money to him, before sending him photos of the transaction slips on WeChat as confirmation.

The police began investigating Lee after a report from a victim and froze his POSB bank account on 1 December 2017. Lee had tried to destroy the evidence from his phone after he realised he was unable to withdraw cash from an automated teller machine.

On 25 February 2019, Lee was sentenced to 18 months of probation. As part of his sentence, he must perform 180 hours of community service and has to remain indoors from 10pm to 6am every day. His mother and sister were also bonded for $5000 Singapore Dollar to ensure his good behaviour.

Student post threat on social media

Sun Sicong Temasek Polytechnic design student from People's Republic of China with PR (Permanent Resident) of Singapore, made a series of violently racist, homophobic, and misogynistic postings on social media.

He posted on Instagram Stories about a "dream" where he gunned down Muslims and others, and stating how it felt "f*cking great" to gun down anyone who was "non-Chinese-looking". The student had also expressed a number of other disturbing views, including blaming an alleged sexual assault victim for not being able to "take it.", and shamed the victim with derogatory terms. In another Instagram Story by him, he posted a picture of a Zippo Lighter Fluid with remarks stating that he would set a studio ablaze, taking the entire design school's block with it.

Temasek Polytechnic later released a statement on its Twitter on 8 June 2020, 1:04 AM. The school is aware of the incident, and "takes a very serious view" of the offensive comments, and are currently investigating the incident. On 8 June 2020, the police arrested Sun for investigation.

On 23 June 2021, Sun was sentenced to 18 months of probation. Under his probation conditions, Sun must remain indoors from 10pm to 6am and perform 60 hours of community service. His parents also paid a bond of $5000 Singapore Dollars to ensure his good behaviour during the period. He was also suspended for 2 semesters following investigation by the school in June 2020.
