A start...

Okay, so this is the first time I've done this. I started by pulling a bit of material from the wikipedia entry for sociolgy and worked through it in a way that i think makes sense. My next run through will involve citations and references. Following that thought it might be a wise idea to talk a bit about the central concepts within sociology--terms like social structure, culture, institution, social action, etc. I think some might start by diving into the history of sociology, but i'm not sure that's the best place to begin. -- Russell Westhaver

List of sociologists

This is discussion moved from a Talk:Catalogs subsubpage for List of Sociologists

Any article titled "list of X" should probably live at X/Catalogs. In this case, though, I might put it under Sociologist or else Sociology. Probably the former, because no doubt we will want articles about what each different kind of specialist does. --Larry Sanger 13:46, 8 October 2007 (CDT)

Hi Larry - still in the states but will jump back into things when I'm back at the end of the week - just a question before I move this list - when one searches for Sociologist I presume that Sociologist/Catalogs will come up as a potential hit along with Sociology, Sociologists etc? Also, are you stuck on the term Catalog? It seems an odd usage for named individual humans (in fact any living animal re: I, for some odd reason, don't mind Fossil Primates/Catalog but find it odd to have Primate/Catalog....) but maybe it just hasn't grown on me.

Lee R. Berger 13:58, 8 October 2007 (CDT)

We have bounced back and forth on different names, before "Catalogs" it was "Tables" and before that it was "Catalog," and before that we had "list of...".

By the way, if this list doesn't contain any more than just links, it really actually belongs under related articles, not catalogs. Catalogs are supposed to have almanac-type information, tables of information, data, etc. --Larry Sanger 14:04, 8 October 2007 (CDT)

Ok - so if I move it to "related articles" sociology, and it is clearly not a catalog, what do I call it? List of Sociologists and leave it as is? Lee R. Berger 06:44, 9 October 2007 (CDT)

A list of sociologists in the related articles of sociology sounds like a good feature to me. The only worry is that for some clusters the related articles might become huge. Although if carefuly sorted this might not be an issue, and maybe an advantage. Chris Day (talk) 08:09, 9 October 2007 (CDT)

I'm not sure where this fits in the grand scheme of things (or the plans mentioned here), but I started a list of sociologists at Sociology/Catalogs/Sociologists awhile back. It makes no pretense of completeness and there are lots of omissions, but I think a case can be made for everyone listed. Feel free to move, editor or add to it at will.
