 "In 1907, Lord Rayleigh formulated the duplex theory [25], which states that sound-source localization is facilitated by interaural intensity differences (IIDs) at high frequencies and by interaural time differences (ITDs) at low frequencies. This theory was (in part) based on the observation that at low frequencies, IIDs between the eardrums do not occur due to the fact that the signal wavelength is much larger than the size of the head, and hence the acoustical shadow of the head is virtually absent. According to Lord Rayleigh, this had the consequence that human listeners can only use ITD cues for sound-source localization at low frequencies.
