Maia M. Langley was born in Louisville, Kentucky and raised in Shelbyville until the age of 18. She conducted her undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Louisville and obtained degrees in Art History, Anthropology/Archaeology. Her M.A. thesis concerned itself with the origins and architecture of the Norwegian Stave Churches and is entitled "Sacred Wood: The Stave Churches of Norway." She began working in Portugal in archaeology during the summer of 1995 and continued her work in European archaeology until 2000 when she made a permanent move to Portugal to pursue a career in Iberian archaeology and began her Ph.D. at the Universidade de Lisboa in History and Archaeology. She is presently the Director and President of PortAnta, a scientific cooperative of archaeologists, researchers, anthropologists and conservation specialists, and is the President of the Iberian Peninsula Society of the Archaeological Institute of America. She is the editor of two monographic volumes centered on the largest Roman villa site in Iberia, Torre de Palma. Her research focuses primarily on the settlement patterns of Iberian societies from the Bronze Age through the Early Medieval periods and the material culture of these periods, especially the ceramic culture. Outside of her research, she devotes her time to educating the general public and children about archaeology and focuses on ways to bring families and communities together through archaeological experiences. She presently resides in Lisbon, Portugal and is an external researcher at the Museu Nacional de Arqueologia and is married to Rui Boaventura, an archaeologist specializing in Megalithic burial tombs and Late Neolithic culture, and is the mother of two children.
