My primary and secondary education took place in a small number of progressive and academically challenging private East Coast schools. Thereafter I studied natural sciences, math and philosophy at Cornell University in New York and philosophy and psychology at Sonoma State College in California. I began my graduate career in a Masters program in Management at Sonoma State and later moved on to Stanford University School of Education. There I earned an MA in the Design and Evaluation of Educational Programs (DEEP) but found I was in over my head before I completed my PhD dissertation. My most important teachers have been my children, my friends and my co-workers whose lessons rarely fall into recognized disciplinary categories.
For work I have been mostly self-employed, engaged in founding and administering businesses, writing educational and technical manuals, teaching (primarily adults), investing in stocks and real estate and participating in professional societies. A list of clients, ranging from small voluntary associations to Apple Computer, Stanford University and UNESCO, is available on request.
In between these activities I have married and divorced twice, raised two young men who are now pursuing successful careers in aviation and film, and enjoyed playing music, riding horseback, skiing, reading and gardening.
