Assistant Professor in Geoinformation Technology. Ph.D., M.Sc.
In 2000 Jan obtained his master degree in Geodesy and Cartography from the Czech Technical University in Prague, the Czech Republic. In 2002 he obtained his M.Sc. in Computer Science with specialization in Database Systems at Aalborg University, Denmark. After his second master degree he joined the Centre for 3D GeoInformation at the same institution, and defended his PhD thesis in 2006. During his PhD period he pursued a research activity primarily in the field of discrete global grids and terrain representation, which he applied it in the development of Digital Earth technology. In 2003 he carried an independent research on global grid indexing at Environmental Systems Research Institute , Redlands, CA, USA.
Jan Kolar established GRIFINOR Project, an independent open source initiative implementing a decentralized virtual globe technology. He is the architect and a major developer of GRIFINOR. Apart from his doctoral thesis he published articles at conferences and books concerning indexing, data representation of geographic features and about Digital Earth technology.
