Dr. De Mars has been Principal Investigator for four Small Business Innovation Research projects on computer-based training, has written funded proposals for a total of over $15 million and performed evaluations for Talent Search, vocational rehabilitation, HCOP, Even Start Family Literacy and SAMHSA grants. She has a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of California, Riverside with specialization in statistics and assessment, MBA from the University of Minnesota and BSBA from Washington University in St. Louis. Her main areas of research are families of people with disabilities and on-line learning. She has also taught at Minot State University, Jamestown College, Cankdeska Cikana Community College and the University of California, Riverside. Leaving a full-time academic career,in 2002, she co-founded a small company on the Spirit Lake Nation. Within twenty-two months, Spirit Lake Consulting, Inc. had over one million dollars in contracted business. Currently vice-president of Spirit Lake Consulting, she is also an adjunct professor at both Loyola Marymount University and Pepperdine University.

Dr. De Mars was also the first American to win a world judo championships and is the vice-president and development chair for the United States Judo Association.
